ABSTRACT

The Introduction sets out the main foci or themes of the book. The starting point is the 2018 final report of the Commission on Religious Education (CORE), and its proposed move from religious education (RE) to Religion and Worldviews, focused on England. Related themes addressed in the book are international perspectives on Religion and Worldviews education; the concepts of religion(s) and worldview(s); forerunners of Religion and Worldviews in English pedagogical approaches such as the interpretive approach, human development and critical realism; ‘knowledge-rich’ education and RE; the contribution of Religion and Worldviews education to personal well-being and the public good; religion and worldview literacy; and the challenge of curriculum design, with attention to Big Ideas.
