ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 attempts to balance national with international concerns. Discussions regarding England might be comparative sources for other jurisdictions; so, too, emphasis on broad-based Religion and Worldviews education evident beyond England are valuable for English deliberations. Research from various countries underlines the need to align Religion and Worldviews with overall educational aims, to build communities, and to prepare young people for democratic citizenship. As well as democratic citizenship, the themes of intercultural understanding and dialogue are prominent, together with a general concern for promoting positive change. In some cases, questions are raised about what democratic religious education would mean in a post-colonial context, and it is envisioned as reflecting the lived reality of religious pluralism, non-religion, and secular representations.
