ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will first discuss the history of ethics at company level. As we will see, ethics has been discussed in this context since the industrial revolution. Secondly, in recent history, we see a renewed interest in ethics in business as a result of certain social trends. Therefore, we will explain these trends in-depth. This modern discussion on ethics in business has led to the emergence of a theory that claims that there is more than just profit: the triple bottom line. In this theory, profit should go hand in hand with taking care of people and our planet. We will critically review this theory with arguments in support of as well as arguments against this approach.
