ABSTRACT

Many museums are important natural or cultural history research facilities. Their collections represent an invaluable resource for numerous scientific disciplines. How can research at museums address the fundamental questions of sustainability? What role do they play in a society that is increasingly shaped by science? In this environment, museums act more than ever at the interface of science and society, promoting an open, participatory and democratic culture of science. This chapter discusses the relevance of sustainability science and transdisciplinary research approaches for future museums. Furthermore, it argues to strengthen epistemological perspectives within museum interpretation. Before this background, Citizen Science in museums is one core element of a Participatory Science Society.
