ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some basic psychometrics concepts applied to neuropsychological testing. In particular, it provides a rationale for considering neuropsychological tests as tools that help to evaluate unobservable constructs (e.g., typically cognitive functions), through observable behaviours. After an initial description of tests and measurement, the chapter discusses the concepts of validity and reliability which need to be taken into account when evaluating the usefulness of a neuropsychological test. The final part of the chapter discussed the methodological principles for selecting a test or for neuropsychological assessment.
