ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the idea of the sport ethnography and outlines the important characteristics of an ethnographic approach. The idea of the ‘short-tern ethnography’ is then introduced, and how this differs from a more ‘traditional’ ethnography is discussed. The different stages of undertaking a sport-related ethnography are presented, as are some of the most important ethnographic methods. The ethical issues associated with such an approach are outlined. The idea of ‘experiential ethnography’ is presented, and the chapter concludes with a discussion of some of the key issues of writing up an ethnographic research project.
