ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the role of the literature review and outlines why it is an important part of any research project. It describes some of the sources of literature available and provides guidance in terms of searching for appropriate literature and assessing the quality of the literature that is identified. Different literature review structures are outlined, presenting both a ‘funnel’ and a thematic structure for the literature review. Guidance on writing and presenting the literature review is presented, concluding with a discussion of some of the common errors in literature reviews.
