ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) view on therapy and therapeutic tasks to clients. There are three main reasons why it is important for the rational emotive behaviour therapist to explain the REBT view on various aspects of REBT theory and therapy. These are: to strengthen the working alliance between therapist and client, to help the client understand key ideas and therefore get the most out of REBT and to enable the client to give informed consent to proceed. It is important that the therapist has an open discussion with their client regarding their respective views on psychological problems. If the client were to become very distressed while describing their problem(s), then it would be appropriate for the therapist to delay introducing the REBT model. It is important that the REB therapist provides a clear outline of the REBT view of therapeutic change, and that this outline distinguishes between realistic and unrealistic views concerning the change journey.
