ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the more technical aspects of the therapist’s tasks and how the therapist helps the client to gain the most from their tasks so that they can make the most out of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. It is essential that the REB therapist helps themself and their client to understand the client’s problems and that the therapist does this with reference to the ABC framework. From the perspective of the working alliance, the therapist needs to ensure that their client understands the ABC framework and how it is relevant to understanding their problems. The chapter examines therapist tasks that help the client to achieve their goals and discusses how their implementation is guided by the working alliance perspective. Before the REB therapist assesses for the presence and nature of a meta-disturbance problem, they need to give the client a rationale for doing so, and should only proceed once the client has indicated that they understand this rationale.
