ABSTRACT

This chapter looks more specifically at the rehousing difficulties and experiences of the families in the survey. It looks at the immediate process of becoming rehoused, as well as the longer-term housing developments since the family left temporary accommodation. The chapter takes a broadly based look at the policies and practices of housing departments in the Administrative County of Glamorgan, seeing how they relate to the risks of losing a home as well as the chances of being rehoused. The Children’s and Welfare Departments felt that some authorities paid no more than lip-service to rehousing problems. One family had been refused rehousing when their house burnt down because the mother was felt to be immoral. The attitudes of housing managers are of crucial importance, as is the need for social work agencies to work much more closely with housing authorities to help tenants in difficulties.
