ABSTRACT

Gifted education programs frequently struggle to meet the needs of underserved gifted students, whether it is finding, identifying, serving, or retaining them. Often school districts focus only on one aspect of the underachievement; however, this approach will not provide the support necessary for long-term change. The Four Zone Equity-Driven Professional Learning Model (4ZEPL) is grounded in equity literacy and culturally responsive theoretical frameworks, along with best practices in professional learning. Zone 1 focuses on the educator’s understanding of culture, the impact of cultural beliefs, and learning about students’ cultures. Zone 2 shifts focus to understanding how culture impacts the manifestation of gifted characteristics. Zone 3 provides the needed support structures and instructional strategies for both the educator and student beyond identification. Zone 4 engages the schools with families and communities, recognizing the critical role these partnerships play in the long-term success of students.
