ABSTRACT

The first zone in the Four Zone Equity-Driven Professional Learning Model, Increasing Educators’ Understanding of Cultural Norms and Equity, is designed to increase educators’ understanding of cultural norms and equity. The work of understanding others first begins with understanding one’s self. Zone 1 also involves a deep dive into understanding race and racism and how systemic and structural inequities are at play in the school undergoing professional learning. Research into the community is essential for the facilitator and participants; it is important not to generalize but to relate specifically to the ethnic and cultural groups that make up the study body populations that are represented in the school community receiving the professional learning. While Zone 1 is the first zone, the model is an iterative process; based on the needs of the faculty, facilitators may return to Zone 1 as warranted. The chapter concludes with activities to use during Zone 1.
