ABSTRACT

Lifelong learning is a catchphrase that is, perhaps, overused in the field of education, yet the message still rings true. Perry states that Black students will succeed when schools foster a leveling culture: one in which a culture of achievement is communicated by all educators and to the entire community, and where collectivism is appreciated. Iterative cycles over time foster environments for continual development, allowing for the equity, diversity, social justice, inclusion, and belongingness work to take root. Systemic change is necessary for the field of gifted education to achieve equity, and this cannot be achieved by a one-person show. One of the biggest dangers in equity work can be the “woke White crew that thinks they're fine”.
