ABSTRACT

Target problem specification arises out of the work done in the problem search: problem areas are identified and then the client is helped to break these down into more detailed and specific problems. There were, however, some clients whom the social workers saw as having major problems that were suited to task-centred help, but where it proved impossible to form a contract because of the opposition of another key person in the situation. One hundred and forty-six cases made an initial contract after a problem search. There is comparatively little social work literature on closing cases and ending relationships with clients. The tasks were now to improve the situation at work. In summary, three-quarters of cases entering a contract were able to end within the agreed time limit. There was no evidence from the follow-up that the time limit caused difficulties. .
