ABSTRACT

Most social workers in social services departments organise their time and describe their activities in terms of cases, and at one time they could readily have justified this framework by an appeal to their expertise in social casework. Social workers are alone in being able to exercise certain statutory functions, have access to resources in a way which community groups do not, and have legitimacy as advocates for other resources which is again not generally shared. The teaching was carried out by the research social worker, and involved the giving of information, role plays, and discussions about the model and its use with cases. The social workers with project cases completed their usual records on them and these were made available to the researchers. They also filled in a number of forms which described the clients’ progress through the model and which included a task achievement scale.
