ABSTRACT

The project was based in a practice a few hundred yards from the main shopping street of Kentish Town, a densely populated district in the London Borough of Camden. Camden also has one of the highest mobility rates in Inner London-16 per cent of the population had moved into their home within the year preceding the 1961 census. Camden is well known as a bedsitter land-34 per cent were single households in 1966 and 46 per cent of households were in shared dwellings. Of the employed Camden residents in 1966, 45 per cent were women and of these 41 per cent were married. Some 70 per cent of the Camden residents were engaged in service employment and approximately one-third were office workers. It belonged to the 15 per cent of Camden practices which did not take private patients. Camden is richly provided with in-patient and out-patient general hospital facilities.
