ABSTRACT

The aim of the chapter is for artists to perceive their body and their movement in space as part of an existing configuration but also as an active player in the arrangement of this space. So, the purpose is that performers recognize that the body can work together or against the dynamics of space and create new dynamics, and that they develop the ability to use and activate space in a meaningful way for the purposes of their performance. In the context of site-specificity, we explain that space already provides a framework for performance which is built around its spatial characteristics. These include geometrical features, history and function of the space. The different configurations of body, space and audience are explored through case studies, activities and a final workshop on places of departure. Overall goals are that artists improve their ability to think abstractly, to develop strategies for experiencing space, and to practice teamwork, through the negotiation of ideas and the practical organization of an action with others.
