ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the CME business model in detail. It focuses on theory and practice with emphasis on the key elements of identifying, creating, and sustaining member value. This involves a review of research relating to the balance needed between the economic and social purposes of the CME, how profit is generated and distributed, the financing of the CME (e.g., share structure, ownership rights, types of capital, and its distribution to shareholders), active membership and community engagement, governance, and preservation of active voice democracy. The current research into these areas is reviewed and discussed, before concluding with suggestions for future research.
