ABSTRACT

The financial services industry has a fossilised structure that ranges from the design of the buildings that house it, to the office equipment used to support it. Financial services firms are often situated in buildings reminiscent of phallic symbols. Skyscrapers were originally intended to accommodate many companies in one building. Financial centres continue to be developed in skyscrapers and centres compete for who has the biggest one. Many roles in financial services, such as in investment banking, have incredibly long hours which make them impossible to combine with being a present parent. The male culture is even embedded in the language. Women were just as intelligent and competent when the financial industry was being created as they are today, but because women were essentially excluded from the business of inventing things and excluded from the business of business itself, they were not part of the invention process.
