ABSTRACT

This the first of several chapters on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on how we will use the built environment differently from now on. This chapter looks at the changing demand for office space as a sizable number of workers will continue working at home at least part of the time. It also looks at the impact that variable work patterns have on the design of people’s homes as well as on the provision of services in neighborhoods, and examines the alternative uses that are possible in the excessive amount of built space that the pandemic has created.
