ABSTRACT
This chapter sets the stage for the University at Buffalo Teacher Residency Program. Arguing first that students, families, and communities deserve high-quality, diverse teachers as a matter of justice, Chapter 1 then provides a brief history of teacher education reform, arguing for a “third way,” which is university-based, community-centered teacher preparation. The chapter concludes by introducing all subsequent book chapters.
