ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the history of the Nauroz which was started by King Cyrus as a traditional and cultural event and having nothing to do with the religion. Nauroz is celebrated annually on March 21, as a traditional and cultural event in Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. In Afghanistan, Nauroz was started by Sultan Hussain Baeqra at Mazar Sharif in Balkh, and this function continues for forty days when games like Buzkushy are held as a part of the event. The people from all over the country gather at Maar-i-Sharif to celebrate the festival on March 21. This chapter also discusses the customs and traditions performed by the Afghans on this day.
