ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the historical trends in the cultivation of poppy crop, production of opium, morphine, and heroin in Afghanistan. The chapter also provides answers to critical questions such as: What are the major areas of cultivation of poppy crop in Afghanistan? What are the sources of smuggling acetic anhydride into Afghanistan? What are the international routes for trafficking of the Afghan opiates? What number of people use drugs in Afghanistan? Why the government of Afghanistan and the international agencies have failed in the eradication of the poppy crop cultivation in Afghanistan?
