ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 delves deeper into the implications of the steady diversification of the working life of an orchestral musician or opera singer. This diversification of skills has had a correlative impact on the training required to be an effective – and employable – 21st-century orchestral musician or opera singer. This chapter discusses the skills needed in the working life of a contemporary orchestral musician and opera singer and examines the extent to which the curricula of tertiary music institutions have adapted to equip students with these skills.
