ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the idea of a spectrum between science fiction and fantasy, that can be used as a critical tool for their evaluation. This is a linear feature that places the works of Gibson, Stephenson, Walton, Miéville and Clarke in tension with each other the better to tease out what makes their various fictions work as speculative fabulations.
