ABSTRACT

This chapter, similar in format to Chapter 7, applies the tracking semiosis methodology to representations of the ancient city of Benin in a series of secondary school history lessons. Six separate frameworks are presented; each concerned with the operation of a single representational process. This allows for differences and similarities in configurations between resource texts and those created by the students to be explored in detail. Resource texts include transcriptions of teacher talk and audio recordings, a chalkboard diagram and visual and written historical source material. Student texts include transcriptions of spoken interactions, gestures, written notes and a final presentation text: a two-dimensional plan of the ancient city of Benin.
