ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some detail matters arising from the fundamental questions, and describes the attitudes of social workers to the sbc related to trends in social work at the present time. The ‘poverty lobby’ in social work, on which the Child Poverty Action Group has been an important influence, is a predictable and useful reaction to excessive preoccupation with psychological factors in social difficulty. Probably the most healthy aspect of relations between social work and the sbc lies in the increasing openness of the latter to discuss and disclose matters of policy. An important aspect of communication concerns welfare referral. Local offices vary greatly in the priority they accord to this aspect of their work and they organise it differently.
