Introduction

This introductory chapter outlines the scope of Playbooks and their Readers in Early Modern England. It describes the monograph’s methodology and key innovation, namely a synthesis of print and manuscript evidence in order to arrive at a fuller understanding of how and why quarto editions of professional plays were read in early modern England, and who their readers were. The chapter also offers an overview of the place of playbooks within the textual culture of early modern England.
