ABSTRACT

The European emphasis on the environment and the American emphasis on the individual are coming nearer together in the concept of the person-in-his-environment as the indivisible unity with which we have to deal. Different countries are struggling with different ways out of this dilemma. An improvement in the casework practice of experienced social workers is thus essential for the better teaching of casework to students. Those social workers who have had an opportunity of learning modern casework methods should be used to the maximum possible extent to take groups for practising social workers on student supervision. Inevitably the schools of social work will be hindered in changing outmoded training methods unless they can recruit to help them social workers who are good practitioners and who are also able to teach. The question of cost is an important element in any realistic discussion of the introduction of casework teaching in European schools of social work.
