ABSTRACT

Recently, the environment within which communicators need to operate has significantly changed. This is mostly a consequence of changes that happened in technology and media. These changes influenced the way people communicate, both with each other, as well as their current and potential employers. One of the biggest and most noticeable changes happened on the internet with the introduction of social media. This chapter, therefore, explains the role of social media in internal communication. Internal social media is a new way for organizations to communicate with their employees, but this chapter also addresses how external communication via social media influences employees’ perception of their employer. It also describes how employees utilize social media to spread and share organizational values. Alongside social media, this chapter addresses organizational change in general and how it impacts internal communication and all the concepts described in the book.
