ABSTRACT

Evaluation or assessment is a constant through all of the student experience, but it reaches its formal culmination in the final period of placement. The evaluation process will therefore be discussed in detail in this chapter. For both individuals involved, the recognition of the importance of assessment usually brings with it a variety of emotional responses. It is advisable for supervisors to make careful preparations for the final period and to offer teaching well in advance about the elements of transfer and termination. The chapter discusses the process of evaluation that is necessary in any student placement. The supervisor's tasks will include preparation for formal evaluations, holding discussion sessions with the student, writing the evaluation, sharing the written evaluation with the student and making use of evaluations in subsequent teaching. The culmination of assessment is either a grade or the decision to pass or fail the student.
