ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to discuss some of the ways of providing education and training for supervisors. It discusses the structure and content of a variety of courses now offered in either student or staff supervision. The chapter contain proposals for field practice in supervisory methods and a report of an experiment in setting up a course with a component of supervised field practice in supervisory methods. Most social work courses today offer courses for new supervisors, and it should be possible for an intending student supervisor to take such a course either before he starts supervising or at least concurrently with his first student. Courses in staff supervision were a later development than those in student supervision, and they are still not as widely available as is desirable. Supervision is a method of social work for which both knowledge and skill are necessary.
