ABSTRACT

In the area of student supervision, the shortage of qualified supervisors usually leads to a number of adjustments. Much of the writing on supervision in community work has centred on student supervision and strenuous efforts have been made to clarify the role. Residential supervisors suffer from some of the same problems as community work supervisors in the realm of student supervision. In addition to differences with regard to method of practice, the people must recognise that in all of the methods there are differences between staff and student supervision. The Home Office sponsored courses throughout the country on student supervision. While there is much greater understanding of all supervision today than in the past, it is probably true to say that there is still more general agreement about expectations of student supervision than of staff supervision. In student supervision, the teaching tasks have first priority but cannot be accomplished without fulfilling administrative and management aspects.
