ABSTRACT

The teaching role of the team leader comes to the fore in relation to his responsibility for staff development. The team leader needs to have quite specific knowledge of what the worker needs to know on the job, what knowledge and skill the worker already brings to the task, and what can be provided in the way of learning opportunities. The principles of learning just listed apply generally whether one is teaching in class or field, adult or young. Probably the major teaching technique used by most team leaders is the discussion method. In this chapter, the authors have been concerned with some of the tasks the supervisor may need to accomplish in his teaching role. The focus throughout has been on the importance of establishing mutual involvement in the learning and teaching tasks, and on the fact that, as in other areas, worker and team leader are dependent upon each other for the success of the process. .
