ABSTRACT

Judgements must be made that the placement will be able to meet the student’s learning needs and the student will be acceptable to the placement. New supervisors will need to prepare themselves for the teaching role. Most student supervisors volunteer for assignment, although some may feel that they have been rather strenuously pressed to volunteer. The new supervisor should expect and receive help individually from a course tutor as well. In addition to the preparatory office arrangements, the supervisor should be thinking about a teaching plan. Before the student arrives the supervisor needs to prepare in a variety of ways. Tentative teaching plans must be formulated and early assignments for the student considered. The supervisor, tutor and student will ultimately be expected to form a working relationship in which all three seek to make the field work experience as productive as possible.
