ABSTRACT

The initial period of field work might well be described as the exploratory period. Very often the student and supervisor are first brought together at a meeting at the university or college. Most tutors who place their students locally try to hold such meetings. The individual session provides an opportunity for student and supervisor to work together to achieve the goals of the placement. In the initial period the supervisor needs to be easily accessible to his student while also maintaining the regular supervisory sessions that will hold throughout the placement. Recording for teaching purposes may take a rather different form from recording for agency requirements. Most students welcome some structuring for their recording for supervision. The fact remains that students vary greatly in their facility with words. Throughout the initial period the supervisor should keep in mind the various areas in which the student will be expected to learn throughout the placement.
