ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on major areas of content of field teaching. Usually when the people speak of field teaching or the practical work experience, it is this element of ‘practice’ that dominates. Teaching in the area of ‘awareness’ needs great care if it is not to slip into a therapeutic focus. The supervisor needs to be clear with both student and tutor about what he can and cannot do. Many a caseworker has learned to work with groups on the job and developed considerable expertise. In all methods, the challenge the supervisor faces in making assignments is first how to gear them to the learning needs and capacities of his student and second, to fit them into the time available. The content of field teaching must be carefully considered. It covers a wide range of activities related to work with clients, administration, recording, use of supervision, and professional values and ethics.
