ABSTRACT

In Part Two the focus will be on the role and tasks related to staff supervision. A discussion of student supervision will follow in Part Three. Staff supervision requires a heavy investment in both administrative and teaching functions. The supervisor works with individuals and groups, and his working relationships are formed within a hierarchical structure. It is necessary for purposes of discussion to divide the multi-faceted roles and functions, although in actual practice they are inextricably intertwined. Indeed, so intertwined are they, that one must arbitrarily select the division and order of presentation. The initial focus in Chapter 3 will be on the roles and duties of a staff supervisor or team leader within the agency structure. Chapters 4 and 5 will deal with his tasks relating to individual workers, first the administrative tasks and then the teaching tasks. Finally, Chapter 6 is devoted to his work with his team in both management and staff development areas. The order of presentation relates neither to the importance of the skills involved nor the difficulties of the tasks. All are essential for effective supervision.
