Media on the smartphone book
This chapter addresses online video and specifically the uses of video on smartphones, together with other animated discourses (GIFs, stickers). It starts with some description of online video and a proposal of differentiation between first-order video (a single user recording a video for an audience) and second-order video, when the video is inserted elsewhere and entails re-contextualisation with new interlocutors, new mutually manifest assumptions, and so on. Some elements of video-mediated communication are commented upon, including contextual constraints, sender, video discourse, audience interpretation, comments/interaction, and non-propositional effects. The chapter next focuses on the specificity of smartphone video apps, including reference to popular apps such as Bilibili and TikTok. The chapter continues with two sections devoted to GIFs and stickers. These could well have been included in Chapter 5 on messaging, but since GIFs and most stickers are animated, this chapter was deemed more appropriate for their analysis.
