ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 analyzes and maps the dynamics of identity and power in four neighborhoods. The chapter discusses the sources and consequences of exclusion of specific groups, low levels of participation, and absence of respect for community among some categories of residents. It describes different identity groups in neighborhoods and shows how favorable comparison, relative deprivation, and prejudice impact intergroup relations. It also outlines sources of legitimacy and the structure of power in neighborhoods.
