ABSTRACT

This chapter situates the creative writing practice of digital storytelling and considers specificities of genre and authorship within the methodology. In so doing, this chapter will provide an overview of the field of storytelling including its origins, growth, and scholarship. It will begin with a discussion of the origins of digital storytelling as a genre as put forth by the Center for Digital Storytelling (now StoryCenter). Then it will examine the compositional process of developing a digital story and discuss the practices of digital literacy and multimodality that shape the field of digital storytelling. Finally, it will provide a contextualization of authorship practices within this process.
