ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 examines strategies deployed by climate deniers and minimizers to distract the public and government officials from scientific findings on the imminent threat of climate change to society. Since the 1970s, fossil fuel corporations have used heavily funded public relations campaigns to undermine an emerging scientific consensus by suggesting there was uncertainty and conflict within the scientific community. Rather than attacking science, they posed as its defenders, demanding more research, not less, while promoting skepticism about existing evidence.
