ABSTRACT
Chapter 13 looks at long-term, short-term, and cyclical factors that influence climate and human civilization. From roughly the beginning of the 14th century until the middle of the 19th century, the Northern Hemisphere suffered through a prolonged cold spell, a Little Ice Age, that forced communities to adapt to difficult climate conditions or else to disappear.
