ABSTRACT
The Amazon River is almost 4,000 miles long and runs roughly along the Equator eastward from the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean in South America. Its immense tropical rainforest contains about half of the Earth’s remaining rainforests. Chapter 18 looks at the history of the Amazon rainforest, the outsized role it plays in regulating weather and climate, and how increased development threatens its survival.
