ABSTRACT
A major theme in Chapter 9 is the contingent nature of history. The evolution of life was not predetermined; natural catastrophes frequently intervened, leading to mass extinctions, and if scientists had the ability to rewind and play Earth’s history again, the overwhelming likelihood is that events would turn out differently. There is no guarantee that the world, as we know it, will survive a climate change-related mass extinction.
