ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on how coaches can use performance profiling with individual athletes and in team settings. The revised performance profile technique involves three specific stages, although it should be noted that the second stage involves a number of specific steps. In the first stage of the revised performance profile, the coach explains what the performance profile is, the different processes involved, and the overall purpose of the performance profile, which is to help an athlete understand his or her strengths and areas that could be improved upon. The purpose of Step 1 is to identify the factors that distinguish elite performers and the opposite of these qualities. Finally, the coach asks the athlete to rate himself or herself for each construct on a seven-point Likert-type scale. Large discrepancies between the coach and the player require discussion between the coach and the player; the two parties should discuss their reasons for granting the score they awarded.
