ABSTRACT

This chapter provides coaches with information regarding how they can develop the mental toughness of their athletes. Defining and conceptualising mental toughness is quite a contentious issue and has resulted in several heated arguments within the sport psychology literature. Mental toughness allows athletes to perform under immense pressure. It is important to consider the mental toughness and mental health relationship, given discussions in the recent literature. Recent research revealed that mental health problems, such as depressive and anxiety symptoms, among professional rugby League players are higher than among the general population. There is a variety of different conceptual models of mental toughness. Researchers have also examined how athletes become more mentally tough throughout their career. Scholars specifically examined the role of coaches in building mental toughness among their athletes.
