ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on how coaches can use questionnaires to gather information about their athletes. Coaches can use questionnaires to assess the extent to which an athlete might be afflicted by a condition, the strategies athletes may use, or assessing the effectiveness of an intervention. Questionnaires will generate objective scores regarding a psychological quality that an athlete might experience. Additionally, coaches can use the objective scores generated to compare with scores of other athletes or data from published research. These comparisons may be useful in providing the coach with objective information. A limitation of questionnaires is that they do not allow athletes to explain their answers or document their experiences. Athletes might find the process of completing questionnaires tiresome and pointless. Coaches should consider the quality of the questionnaire that they use, and where possible, they should avoid disseminating questionnaires to athletes who are not supported by published research.
