ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to important ways to connect with and stay with their emotions when these feel overwhelming. It introduces the reader to two experiential tasks, the Clearing a Space task and the Compassionate Self-Soothing task, which are both designed to be used when feeling upset or overwhelmed by an emotional experience. This chapter forms the foundation for the subsequent experiential work presented in the workbook. The reader is also encouraged to return to this chapter and practice the two tasks to regulate their emotions if they are experiencing any upset or when their emotions feel too intense and overwhelming. The chapter also presents case examples to guide the reader about how to undertake the tasks and provides detailed step-by-step guidance sheets so that they can undertake the tasks themselves. The chapter concludes with a summary sheet and quiz for self-assessment.
