ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 builds on the previous chapter and focuses on helping the reader become more aware of how we can be emotionally avoidant. This chapter then offers to the reader the practice of an experiential task focused on emotional interruption (or self-interruption), i.e., the ways we (a) stop ourselves from feeling painful or uncomfortable emotions, (b) stop expression of certain emotions in certain contexts, and (c) avoid situations that could trigger painful emotions. The task, the Self-Interrupter, introduced in this chapter is designed to assist the reader to feel and express important emotional experiences that inform their actions and behaviour. The chapter also presents case examples to guide the reader about how to undertake the task and provides detailed step-by-step guidance sheets so that they can undertake the task themselves. The chapter concludes with a summary sheet and quiz for self-assessment.
